History of the Company
It starts near Bracebridge, Ontario, with Alfred, an orphan boy sent from England in the 1880's. From this central town of Muskoka District, located on the 45th parallel of latitude, the story of the Hammond family follows the spread of passenger and freight transportation throughout Ontario, across North America and around the world.
Alfred became a lumberman and farmer, and his son Harold, born to Muskoka in 1902, found he had an aptitude for mechanical devices and engines. Harold became a mechanic and a truck driver.
Harold's eldest son, Orvil grew a one owner-operated taxi business at age 15 to school buses, and delivery trucks. In time, the business, Hammond Transportation, expanded to include tour coaches and a travel agency.
Harold's youngest son, Paul, began as a young driver to the owner-operator of a little red tractor and a rusty old trailer to the purchase of the trucking portion of Hammond Transportation. Muskoka Transport is ranked as the 83rd largest in the Canadian trucking industry in the year 2000.
